How to Identify Quality in a Silk Saree

Quality in a silk saree shows in the weave, the evenness of the border, and a product description that says what the fabric is. Do not treat a home burn, rub or smell test as proof of purity. Those checks are easy to misread and can damage the saree.

Look at the weave, not only the shine

Shine can come from silk, from a finish, or from a synthetic. Hold the saree so light crosses the body. A woven pattern changes with the yarn. A print stays flat. Turn the border over: a woven motif has a structured back, while a printed one does not.

Texture, drape and finishing

  • The body should feel consistent from one end to the other, without sudden thin patches.
  • Pleats should form without the fabric cracking along an old fold.
  • Loose floats, broken zari and an uneven pallu are finishing issues you can see before you buy.
  • A blouse piece, if included, should be noted on the product page.

What a reliable product description includes

Prefer a listing that names the fabric, the main colour, whether a blouse piece is included, and any care note. A phrase such as Banarasi or Kanjivaram describes a tradition; it does not by itself prove the saree was handwoven. Compare that language with the silk and georgette guide.

Care labels matter more than folklore tests

After purchase, follow the care label or ask for professional cleaning when the label is unclear. Storage habits are in the care guide. Burning a thread, rubbing it, or tasting a fibre will not give you a dependable answer and can ruin a corner of the saree.

Does a higher price guarantee pure silk?

No. Price can reflect zari, labour, design and demand. Read the fabric description and look at the weave.

Are home purity tests reliable?

No. They are easy to misread. Use the visible weave, the seller’s description, and the care label instead.

What should I do if the saree does not match its description?

Check the returns page for the current window and condition rules, and contact the store with the order details.
