How to Care for Silk, Georgette, Chiffon and Embroidered Sarees

Care for a saree by reading its label first. Air it after wear, keep it away from damp and direct sun, and do not leave it in a tight plastic cover for months. If the label is missing or the saree is heavily embroidered, use a professional cleaner instead of guessing a home wash.

After every wear

  1. Shake out confetti, petals and perfume mist before they settle.
  2. Air the saree in the shade for a few hours.
  3. Do not spray perfume or deodorant directly on the fabric.
  4. Attend to a fresh stain promptly, using a method the care label allows.

Silk

Silk marks along a fold if it stays creased for months. Refold on a different line a few times a year. A cotton or muslin cover is usually kinder than sealed plastic in a humid cupboard. Zari can tarnish with moisture and friction, so avoid crushing the border under heavier clothes. The silk quality guide is about buying; this section is about keeping what you already own.

Georgette, chiffon and embroidery

Handle each fabric on its own terms
FabricHandlingCleaning
GeorgetteSupport the length so it does not snagFollow the label; do not assume a machine wash
ChiffonAvoid pulls from jewellery and rough nailsPrefer the care label or a specialist if it is embellished
Embroidery or zariStore flat enough that threads are not crushedProfessional cleaning when the label does not allow home washing

Fabric behaviour when you buy is covered in silk versus georgette. Care after buying still depends on the label sewn or stated for that piece.

Storage habits that prevent damage

Keep sarees in a dry cupboard, off the floor, and out of direct sun. Cedar or neem is a traditional moth precaution; replace it when the scent fades. It is not a guarantee against insects. If you are ordering a new piece, the buying checklist reminds you to read the care note before checkout.

Can I wash every silk saree at home?

No. Wash or dry-clean only as the care label allows. If there is no label, ask a specialist cleaner.

Is plastic storage safe?

A short trip in a bag is different from months in sealed plastic in humidity. A breathable cotton cover is the safer long-term choice.

What should I do with a set-in stain?

Do not keep rubbing it. Take the saree, and the care label, to a professional cleaner.
